Michael Jackson´s last visit to Japan in 2007

In Tokyo’s bustling Shibuya district, a woman makes a beeline for the Michael Jackson display on the second floor of the HMV music store. Crying under her green knit cap, she reaches for “Visionary,” a black box of video singles from the King of Pop and a few of the Michael Jackson boxed figurines on display. Sho-ma — a dancer whose first exposure to Jackson was the album “Off the Wall” when she was in the third grade — said she first heard the news of Michael Jackson’s death at 8 a.m. at her home in Tokyo. Another fan in the shop, 23-year-old Toshiki Nakamura, pulls out his iPhone and scrolls through a long list of Jackson albums. “I was so shocked when I heard,” he says.

As the news of Michael Jackson’s sudden death dominated Friday morning television programs in Japan, Tokyo music stores didn’t miss a beat. The singer’s death has already spurred album sales worldwide. The HMV display was hastily set up in the Summer Sale section with more than ten of Jackson Five and Michael Jackson solo albums. A sign read: “MICHAEL IS FOREVER. R.I.P. JACKO.”

Around the corner Tower Records blasted music outside from “Bad,” Jackson’s seventh album, and had also set up three displays devoted to the his music inside. Fans started trickling in when Tower opened at 10 a.m.; a die-hard fan dressed like Jackson in his “Billie Jean” video even entered the store and flipped through the albums. Tower’s clerks said they had been fielding calls all morning asking about Jackson’s albums in stock, and expected more as the news spread. Masayuki Ikeya, 30, says he first saw and heard Michael Jackson when his parents showed him a videotape of Moonwalker. “I was really young and when I saw him, I knew he wasn’t Japanese,” he says. “But by the way he danced, I didn’t think he was human — he was unbelievable.”

20090630 610x 300x226 Asia is still mourning Michael Jacksons Death (cartoonleap.com/chinasmack.com))Fans are pushed back by security officers as they try to snap some photos of U.S. pop star Michael Jackson upon his arrival at Narita international airport near Tokyo, Sunday, March. 4, 2007. Smiling and waving to screaming fans, Michael Jackson arrived in Japan on Sunday for his second visit here in recent years to host an exclusive party where fans get to spend 30 seconds with the pop icon for US$3,500 (euro2,700) a pop

Jackson’s fan base in Japan started to grow after the Jackson Five’s first tour here in 1973. Sales of “Off the Wall” (1979) reached 500,000, followed by 2.5 million copies sold of “Thriller”, which sold an estimated 105 million copies worldwide. The star did a scooter commercial for Suzuki Motors in 1982 — the year “Thriller” came out — in which he says “Love is my message” and winks.

And unlike some corners of the globe, where tabloid infamy and legal troubles started to make inroads on his ticket sales, Japan proved to be a more forgiving audience for Jacko. In 1996, two years after he paid some $22 million to the family of a child he was accused of molesting, he performed eight sold out concerts at Tokyo Dome. In 2007, Jackson hosted about 300 of his loyal fans who each paid more than $3,500 for a buffet dinner and concert by Japanese Jackson impersonators — with the main attraction being a 30-second private meeting with Jackson. Jackson seemed to reciprocate the love of his Japanese fans. Before that trip, he had said, “I love Japan…It is one of my favorite places in the entire world.” Footage taken during the visit shows Jackson referring to it as a “second home.”

On Friday, even Japanese government officials were saddened by the news of Jackson’s death. Internal Affairs and Communications Minister Tsutomu Sato told reporters, “I feel sad as I had watched him since he was a member of Jackson Five.” And Defense Minister Yasukazu Hamada has credited him with building a generation with his music. Back at HMV, using her scarf to dab her eyes now and again, Sho-ma says that she wasn’t completely saddened when she heard the news. “I felt relieved for him,” she says. “I think he was kind of a true angel.”

I saw the South Park episode about him. I do not think he molested boys, but rather wanted to be forever innocent… He hoped there could be a world where there were only children, only innocence… His childhood affected him a lot.

Michael Jackson isn’t dead, he’s just been forced into hiding by the evil kung-fu ninja killer cult of diabolic bad music (EKFNKCODBM). One day after ascending the seventh level of the Elvis Lee arts he’ll come back to the mortal realm to heal the world and make it a better place.

鱼鱼喝奶:

My father was watching the news this morning. He is over 50-years old, and upon seeing this news he yelled for us to wake up. I ran over astonished to see the report, sigh.
Heaven must be very bright now!!!

Michael Jackson was killed by Iranian agents at the behest of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in order to divert attention from his oppression of the Iranian people. It worked. There is not a major news network in the country that is talking about Iran, they are spending their time on Farrah Fawcett, Michael Jackson, and comparisons to Elvis. Meanwhile Iranians die, and they get no TV specials.

箭头向上的糖果:

In university there was a girl who was passionately in love with Michael. Whenever she heard anyone say he was “abnormal/perverted/deviant” she would get angry and fight with them. It was from that girl that I slowly came to realize his charm! Now when I look at his stuff from 20 years ago I still get excited and thrilled! He is not just a king to me but also a a symbol of my youth!

想写小说:

MJ passed away~~ makes me feel very old. The superstar of a generation.

Too too too too too sudden…
I was just telling my husband that we must save money during our lifetimes to go see him in concert…

They had said within the hour or so,  which means soon we’ll be back up and running with the old toys :)

This also means i need some volunteers to help me get the following up and running:

  • Oshare’s Wiki
  • Oshare’s Forum
  • Moderators for the Oekaki
  • Oshare’s Topsites
  • Bravenet Classifieds

Any volunteers please do me a huge favor and email me at haldeje1 AT student DOT op DOT ac DOT nz

(Weird Asia News) Humanized Robot!

Hiroshi Ishiguro, a senior researcher at ATR Intelligent Robotics and Communication Laboratories in Japan, who has created a robot that looks and moves exactly like himself.

Created to fill in for him as professor at Osaka University, this robot twin known as Geminoid HI-1 even has the personal idiosyncrasies of its owner. It sits and fidgets, taps its toes and can sit in a chair and gaze around the room. The shoulders rise slightly as though it were really breathing.

It is so life-like that more than a few shivers creep up the spines of those who watch Geminoid HI-1 in action. Made from silicone casts actually taken from Ishiguro’s own body, Geminoid is powered by pressurized air and small actuators. Its micro-movements run on semi-autonomous motion programs.

Telecommuting has reached new limits as Ishiguro can now send his voice via lip sensors through the Geminoid robot from his home, more than one hour’s ride from the university.

Ishiguro seeks to convey, via the robot, a sense of sonzai-kan, or presence. It is this intangible factor that makes Geminoid HI-1 somewhat eerie.

“The idea is tele-interaction. If I access the android through the Internet, I do not need to go to ATR anymore. I want to check whether students, as well as my family can feel my presence through Geminoid. If I could have one robot at the university, and one at ATR, I would just do all my work from a hot-springs resort,” jokes Ishiguro.

Ishiguro calls his approach of combining engineering and cognitive science for the purpose of performing experiments about human perception, “android science.” He views Geminoid as a vehicle that can be used to learn more about human nature.

How far can this go?

Don’t ask Ishiguro; request an answer from Geminoid HI-1.

Perhaps you won’t even know the difference.
